Fishing at Pymatuning Reservoir, PA
A vast, sprawling reservoir on the Ohio border, Pymatuning Reservoir is one of the best fishing spots in either state for channel catfish, walleye, and several other game fish species. Largely encompassed within Pymatuning State Park, the reservoir is easily accessible and offers a diverse habitat for fishing.
Size: 17,088 acres.
Location: Crawford County in Pennsylvania and Ashtabula County in Ohio, about 58 miles southwest of Erie and 48 miles north of Youngstown.
Access: Pymatuning State Park spans most of the Pennsylvania side of the shoreline, with several boat launch facilities, shore access sites and wheelchair-accessible fishing piers.
Predominant Fish Species: Walleye, channel catfish, black crappie, bluegill, yellow perch, bullhead, common carp, muskellunge, largemouth and smallmouth bass.
Special Regulations: Anyone fishing from a boat can fish anywhere on the lake with either a Pennsylvania or Ohio fishing license. Shore anglers must have a valid license issued by the state they fish from.
Fishing Tips and Tactics: Drifting, trolling and casting are all effective tactics for walleye, and some of the best fishing for this species takes place in spring, when they can be found in shallower water. Worm harness rigs, crankbaits and jigs tipped with bright-colored soft plastics are all good baits for Pymatuning's walleye. Catfish can be caught from shore any time from spring through fall on smelly, natural baits, with some of the best action taking place at night. Crappie spawns around shallow brush and woody cover in spring, and they often strike small jigs and live minnows. Bass fishing heats up in summer. Focus on rocky areas for smallmouth bass, or target largemouths around weed beds and submerged timber.
